As with all the planning sessions, we started with 3 ideas. Then we looked for inspiration on those 3 themes. This year, Mark ended up deciding on our Circus theme (he possibly didn’t want to be a mermaid hehe). We then got to work on outfits first, as these take the longest to make. Sourcing materials from current stashes, and spending hours scouring material shops had us coming up trumps. The tent on the other hand gave us no end of grief! Who would have thought, making a tent would be so difficult! Next it was onto the accessories. We saw an old ladder at a Mt Tambourine antique shop and it was snapped up in a second. Gumtree (a prop addicts best friend) provided the unicycle. There are a surprisingly large number of these on there? The ticket sales stand has been an old faithful prop and has been featured in many sessions. We made 5 bags of popcorn and had our first ever attempt at toffee apples. Much to the children’s delight, these worked perfectly!
We hand made the felt flames for the ring of fire, and glued them onto a hula hoop. Our beautiful Gertrude, who graciously made an appearance was such a well behaved chicken! She happily sat on our tub and chatted away to us, seemingly enjoying all the attention! Who knew chickens were such proud show offs. The day didn’t all go according to plan however. We struggled with gale force winds and a quickly fading light. My beloved ticket stand may not live to see another session. It was whipped about, and flung all over the place! It took nearly an hour to get the tent standing and even then we were worried it would go flying! This put us behind schedule and meant we didn’t get all of the planned shots. It has been a while since we included mum and dad in a session so we decided to invite them to play with a few set up’s too. The kids love seeing them have fun and it’s something they talk about long after the day.
